About Us

Our aims and objectives

Citizens Theatre's Current Programme

The Theatre has three performing spaces and each year presents a minimum of nine of its own productions of the best drama from Britain, Europe and America. In addition it presents a spring season of visiting companies and acts as host to the annual Scottish Youth Theatre Summer School.

To receive information regarding current or future productions at the Citizen's please contact our Box Office on 0141 429 0022 or email info@citz.co.uk

Gorbals Citizens Scheme

We are currently operating a reduced ticket price scheme for residents of the Gorbals, our local community. This scheme allows people to see Citizens’ Company productions for £1 if they have a Gorbals Citizens Card. To support this scheme we have highly successful Open Days to increase the local community’s familiarity with and ownership of the building. If you want to find out if you are eligible for a Gorbals Citizens Card call 0141 429 0022 or come into the theatre and ask for details at our Box Office.

Gorbals Drama Workers

The Citizens' Theatre is delighted to announce the appointment of Guy Hollands and Neil Packham as Gorbals Drama Workers, a new role funded by the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation, Northern Rock Foundation and the Community Fund.

Their appointment will commence on 3 December 2001 when they will initially undertake a wide range of exploratory workshops and community consultation in the Gorbals, before drawing up a three-year plan of drama-based projects for the local community.

For more information contact Guy or Neil on 0141 429 5561.

Community Projects

In the past, the theatre has produced special projects with community performers. In 1999, members of the James Shield Project, Gorbals Initiative and Cardonald College worked on the critically acclaimed Driving Out A Devil community project. This played to 175 people over a week. In April 2000, working closely with Gorbals Initiative, Action: An Evening of Sam Shepard Plays was very successful, playing to over 300 people.

In our Spring Season 2001 David Mamet's Edmond followed on from Action. The production played to 392 people over five nights - it is worth noting that local people purchased 29% of the tickets using our Gorbals Card Scheme.

With coverage on national TV, previews in the Scotsman and Metro, along with a review in The Herald, our community performance project and the individuals involved helped raise the profile of drama work in the Gorbals to new levels.

By continuing with similar projects in the future we hope to strengthen our partnership with local community groups.

Open Day

Each Autumn the Citizens' Theatre takes part in Glasgow Open Doors Day. Please contact our Box Office nearer the time for details.

Backstage Tours

These are available to groups who book to see a production. For details call Martin Travers on 0141 429 5561.

Education Workshops

For secondary schools we offer workshops linked to main house and studio productions, the aim of which is to encourage and develop young people's interest in language and drama. We also tailor text-specific workshops each season that are taken out to schools as well as Teachers’ Masterclasses, to give teachers an opportunity to discuss texts in depth with a Citizens’ Director.
