On
Cathcart Road, near its junction with Pollokshaws Road, stand the remains of Alexander
‘Greek’ Thomson’s Caledonian Road Church.
This is a category ‘A’ listed building and is considered to be of national or international importance.
The church was built in 1856-7 in Thomson’s Greek style with its masterly square tower, the Ionic portico at first floor level, the masonry laid in alternating broad and narrow bands, and the unusual base course of irregularly shaped stones. Its interior was bright and colourful, unlike most Victorian churches.

It
stopped being a place of worship in 1962 and was gutted by fire in 1965. Attempts
to achieve its restoration have been slow and it remains today a shell of a
remarkable building.
