In
South Portland Street, two neat rows of setts are a reminder of the tram route
that used to run here.
Part of the street beyond Oxford Street has the unimpressive buildings of Alzheimer Scotland Action on Dementia, the Glasgow Medical Missionary Society and the Salvation Army.
Previously here was the Victorian charity for the ‘deserving poor’, Guild of Aid who originated playschools, drama and dancing classes and holidays for needy families.
The
more impressive red sandstone building at the corner with Norfolk Street is
the Glasgow Centre for the Deaf. This was formerly the Gorbals’ second free
library but closed in 1986.
