The building opposite the Gorbals Burial Ground is the
oldest surviving iron-framed ‘fireproof’ cotton mill in Glasgow,
possibly in Scotland, dating from 1821.
It was the subject of industrial disputes in 1824 (when there were two shootings in Ballater Street), and 1837 (when some employees were attacked).
Cotton spinning stopped in the 1860s, and the building has more recently been used for clothing manufacturing, by Twomax (hence the familiar name), and offices.
