Location 11 - Southern Necropolis

First laid out in 1840, the Southern Necropolis provided a burial ground for the greatly increased population.
The ornate gatehouse is the work of Charles Wilson in 1848.

It
replaced the Old Gorbals Burial Ground in Old Rutherglen Road that had become
seriously overcrowded. It held two of the mass burial pits resulting from smallpox
epidemics. The graves of some well-known people are inside, though not all are
clearly recognisable.

Dominating
the skyline over the gatehouse, looking from inside the necropolis, are two
recently improved tower blocks.

The cemetery contains over a quarter of a million burials.
