Does anyone remember my dad from the Gorbals in the 1950s his name was Frank Wilson and he lived in Centre Street, before that he lived in Cathedral Street. His parents Robert and Aggie also lived in Centre Street around the same time.

I think I remember the name Estelle Cameron -If I remember right - she was the mam of the family - her husband was a new age guy (for that time) and he "helped" hang out the washing. and was very much a family man. I only remember cos my mam Edie and her pal Ellen Morrison used to talk about how good a man he was. IF it is the same family you lived top end of Florence Street - across from Kames Street - next to what was Dixon Blazes - I think it became Templetons Carpet Factory then Castle Cash and Carry. Anyway there was this high one of end back court. Up your close was Linda and John Short (children) cannae remember parents names. I lived at 60 Kidson Street and we shared this enormous back court which stretched from the Salvation Army building right down to Florence Street, where I think you lived.

I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR ANOTHER PLACE WHERE ANECDOTES ARE WRITTEN LIKE THE EX-GORBALS PEOPLE DO AND HAVE NOT FOUND SUCH A PLACE.IS IT SAFE TO SAY THAT WE LIVED AND WERE RAISED IN A PLACE THAT HAD NO EQUAL?.ARE WE THE MOST FORTUNATE PEOPLE? FROM WHAT I READ EVERY DAY IN THESE PAGES I AM CONVINCED THERE WAS NO PLACE LIKE THE "OLD GORBALS". IF WE COULD RE-LIVE ALL THESE MEMORIES TO-GETHER WOULD THAT BE A JOY FOREVER? I'D SAY 'AYE. DREAM ABOUT IT AS I HAVE YOULL BE AMAZED. MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR WHEREVER YOU ARE. DAVE S.

F.A.O Charley Broon Canada Hi Charley the Palace picture house was open in 1963 but it was turned into a bingo hall. The Citizens theatre is still there (Princess as I knew it when I was young)Don't know when the diamonds closed I'll try and find out. Asked my sister who went to it but she couldn't remember but she said the same as you if you weren't doing the dance right he cut in. Also there were 2 dance floors one was for learners There was an article in the papers (Evening Times) not so long ago and the diamonds wasn't mentioned in it, the Plaza was, it still stands but is derelict there is talk of it getting pulled down. Merry Christmas and "aw the best" to you and your family for 2006

By the way, did you notice that recent message that mentioned a Mary Tinney? Do you think she was part of our family? And to everyone in the Gorbals - Merry Christmas - I WISH I WAS THERE!!!

My father, the late Mr. Donald Rankin grew up I believe on Glasgows south side and attended Adelphi Terrace school. His siblings were Jean, George, Graham, Lilly. He left school to support the family after his father deserted them. His brother George was killed in WWII. Donald immigrated to the US in the early 1950's. Just wondering if anyone remembers any of the Rankin kids. Thanks. George Rankin

Dae ye remember those frosty foggy nights before Christmas when ye could taste the bite in the air? Yer knees were cauld an' yer hauns were stuck deep in yer short's pockets. Me, an' ma pals, would play "Bags I that" while gazing intae the windae o" that wee shop jist alang fae The Paragon Picture Hoose. The wee shop's windae wis brightly lit by that time, the war bein' oer an' a', an' it had a wee selection o' toys. It wis fae that same shop that I used tae fetch two ounces o' "Black Plug" baccy for my Granpa, "Paw McGuire". Ah tried cewin it wan time, wi' unfortunat results! Dae ye remember? The street would be busy those evenin's wi' folk shoppin', an' many would be making their annual pilgrimage tae see the nativity scene in St Francis' chapel. We knew the great day wis comin' an' we a' felt lifted by it. Ma mammy had got us a wee Christmas tree an' decorated it wi' tinsel and wee candles (Candles! kin ye imagine doin' that noo?) Ah had ta'en a roll o' silver paper an' spelt oot the words "Merry Christmas" alang the fron o' the fireplace mantle. Ah tore the silver paper intae strips and licked the pieces tae make them stick....It took ma Mammy months tae get the stuff aff the fireplace! Dae ye remember? It wis almost time for the "Prezzies" tae be brought forth fae their various "Planks" aboot the hoose ( A' searched for and discovered ) or fae the more secure depository at the neighbours. We knew thaat there would be the predictable "Dandy" an' "Beano" albums, plus, hopefully, other rerr treasures. We, the weans, a' ran oor messages wi' a renewed goodwill and enthusiasm, for neighbours an' relations alike. It wis "The" marvellous time of the year. Dae ye remember? Ah really hope ye dae, an' Ah wish yese a' Merry Christmas alang wi' The memories of an auld Glesca Christmas.

Can anybody tell me when Diamond's dancing academy in Gorbals St closed down? some great nights there, except when old Joe would cut in if you were making a hash of the dance, embarassing for a fifteen year old boy, doing the tango with an old geezer, but he wasn't a bad kisser - just kidding. Amelia, I live in Charleswood in Winnipeg, Cathcart St. When you're in New York go to a district called Hell's Kitchen on the West Side, just like the Gorbals, or used to be----cheers.

For Natalie USA. I remember the Travers family well, especially your Mum Ann, and your Uncle Jim, also your Gran Mary and your Grandad. Our family name was Saleh, we lived at 16 Clellend Street. Our names are Theresa (me) Thomas, Norman, Catherine and Gerald. Our Gran Susan Hughes lived down the stairs from us, she had 6 daughters, Maggie (my Mum) Theresa, Lena, Katie, also May and Jean who went to Canada after the war. I remember playing with your Mum very well, and your Gran lifting me up in her arms and taking me to my Mum when I fractured my arm after falling off a dyke, I would have only been about 6 or 7 then. Give my regards to your Mum I am sure she will remember me. Also remember the Harrity, Crawford, Colombs, McAvoy, Wisemans, Conners, Hannahs, Duffs and Gallaghan Families. Hope to hear from You Soon. l lived at 60 Kidson St. next to the Salvation Army Hall. The Band of hope was at one end of the street and the cemetry was at the other. My parents were Gordon Ford and Jean (nee hughes). My dad was a taxi cab owner & driver known as the Big Yin his plate # was SGG 223. My nickname was Jinty. We moved to the Drum around 1954 and lived at 28 Heathcot Ave. until I married in 1963 and moved to Aussie in 1964. My mother passed away in 2002. After she passed we found some poetry that she had written that I would like to share with you. I have a friendly smile, I give my smile away, The milkman and the postman seemed glad of it each day, I took it to the shops, and wore it on the streets, I gave it without thinking to all I chanced to meet, I always gave my smile away, as thoughtless as could be, and every time I gave it my smile came back to me. If you visit the Fergus Scottish Festival in Fergus, Ontario, Canada during the second full weekend in August you can come to the tea garden and say hello to me. Just look for the dumb broad wearing the full length dress kilt in 100F weather, thats me.

Riveting website!! Just spent three hours reading all of the messages, they are very informative. and give you a good picture of what life was like. My Mom and my Aunt's spoke of only the happy times they had growing up in the Gorbals. Looking for -- what became of McKechnie Street? Our ALEXANDER Family lived there until 1878. What became of Waddell Street? My Mom, Isabella ALEXANDER DOUGAN was born there in 1907. Also, regarding Dance Halls, our 2nd cousin, Duncan MCKELLAR, won many competitions during the 1920's and 1930's, possibly into the 1940's. Family lore has it that a "Gang" disrupted one of the Glasgow Competitions, similar to those described in "No Mean City." Looking forward to hearing from you. Jean.

I want to say Merry Christmas to everyone living in The Gorbals and thoses of us who lived there when we were young. I want to say to all of you, I hope everyone of you has Happiness and Love and Warmth in your lives at this time of the year and the coming year. I miss the Gorbals and my childhood there. I was born in the Gorbals in 1945. I lived at 99 Gorbals St, right at Gorbals Cross. I miss Glasgow and the Gorbals so much. It was a very tough place to live but it gave me everything I needed to survive in life. I could have gone to prison based on the environment I was living in but instead, I made a decision one cold night that I wanted to change my life. I finished up being a Police Officer on the Toronto Police Department for 31 years. The Gorbals has never left me. What we all endured living in the Gorbals has made me a better person and given me so much appreciation for life. In many ways you never leave the Gorbals. In that area, I met some of the best people I have ever met in my life. Our poverty helped us all help each other. I want to say hello to all of you that lived in the Gorbals. It made us one of a kind. Sincere best regards to my fellow neighbours. Joe.

Also the McCaffertys. Peter Inglis married Margaret McCaffery in 1965. Any info would be gratefully received. To Ten Quid...The club was the Oxford. It was owned by Tommy Gilmour Sr. It also had a betting shop before they were legal. It was run by Bobby Hamilton who I'm sure Charlie Endell in Budgie was based on. On a sunday Bobby would open the boxing club for "square goes" to settle disputes and avoid gang battles. I lived with my parents and sister Stella, and my 2 uncles Joe and Sammy at 10 Abbotsford Place since I was a wean, until 1955 when we moved to East Kilbride. I'm 65 now and live in Toronto, Canada, but always love comin' back to visit Glasgow and the rest of Scotland. My wife's Canadian, and she loves coming to Scotland too. Does anyone have pictures of Abbotsford Place, particularly No. 10 and thereabouts, from around the 50s to before the area was demolished ? When we lived there, it had quite a Jewish community. I remember musician Harry Margolis live across the road from us, and I remember Geneens Jewish restaurant on Abbotsford Place, though I was never in it. Our family used to go to South Portland St. Synagogue. All long gone, so the only memories are through photos. Did anyone have home movies of the Gorbals during it's heyday ? I remember, as a kid, the walk from oor hoose to Abbotsford School. It's all such wonderful nostalgia. Feel free, anyone, to contact me offline if you wish.

I remember queuing up the lane with my mother and sisters and brother to see the Logan family, the lane is still there and the Scotia Bar is still on the same site. We used to go also to the Princess theatre which is now called the Citizens theatre you had to queue up in Old Rutherglen Rd. to get into the "Gods" of the theatre. Sometimes they shone a torchlight around the theatre and whoever it stopped at won a prize my auntie Katie won a zinc pail in those days that was a great prize to win.

Wee story, One visit back to Scotland I visited the Southern Necropolis. I used to live at 197 Caledonia road overlooking the cemetary. The tombstones make marvelous reading so I spent some time wandering around. I came across a wee man leaning on a brush and I asked him if he was the custodian. He replied "Naw, Ah jist look efter the place"!

F.A.O. Bernadette Burns (Ireland) If your uncle was a Catholic and died in the Gorbals the only graveyards Catholics went to were either Dalbeth which is out at Parhead direction if you know Glasgow on the way to Celtic Park, The other cemetaries are St. Convilles which is on the Southside of Glasgow up by Pollok and the other is St. Kentigerns which is in the north side of the city these are the only Catholic graveyards in Glasgow that I know of but then people are being buried in other graveyards now it doesn't have to be Catholic ones. As for the pawn next to St Johns I cannot remember there being a pawn there as that was the chapel that I went to it is now demolished and highrise flats are in it's place (SAD) as it was a beautiful chapel all marble I wonder what happened to it all. Hope you find out something.

Hi Norma, like yourself I and my five brothers and sisters were born at 121 lawmoor st. Also my father and his seven brothers were also born there, previously named south wellington st. We moved from there in 1939 to a new house in Pollokshaws but still visited some of the old neighbours. The Mrs Smith that you speak of I’m sure is the same old lady that I used to run the odd messages for (mostly snuff) she and Mr Smith were good friends of my paternal grandfather who stayed with them on and off whenever he fell out with my father which was quite often. I'm sorry that I can't tell you more about the family, Mr Smith I believe was a Carter, the neighbours as I remember were as follows; Bottom flat: the Carden family, Annie Collins, the Sangster family who moved to the same road as ourselves in Pollokshaws in 1939. 1 up: Mr & Mrs Smith, the Masterton family, who moved to Carnwadric in 1939, the McQuade family. 2 up: Mr Stewart, the Daly family, the O'Rourke family. 3 up: the Cauley family, the Brennen family and finally ourselves the Carruthers family. The Daly’s later moved into our room & kitchen flat, Tommy Daly was my best pal and who sadly passed away some years later, His sister Bridget (Macgregor) who I still see occasionally, married and moved into Annie Collins house after Annie’s death. Prior to posting this I met Bridget in shawlands today friday, she remembers you well and sends her regards and asked me to mention a relative of hers you know Mary Young. Regards, Davie Carruthers.

I am trying to get info/history on the family members I have never known. My mom, Ann Hill was born in Dumfries, 1955, her father is Alfred Hill, whose mother is, I believe, Margaret Curley. Alfred married Christine (last name now unknown). The family moved to Canada (Ontario) in the early 1960's. Christine left Alfred Hill, who then married a woman by the name of Kathleen. I have heard my great grandma Margaret Curley has passed away approximatley early 90's. I would like any info on any of my distant relatives still residing in Dumfries, or Scotland. This may be a long shot but nothing ventured and all that. Firstly, my mum and dad both went to the Gorbals to work, I'm talking 1930's mid to late. My mums maiden name was Agnes Quinn and my dads name was Paddy Baxter. When mum first arrived in Glasgow she lived at 122 Hospital Street. She worked in a fish shop in Crown Street, it was apparently run by an Italian couple, went by the name of Louis ande Lizzie. She went to St John's Chapel and also worked in Woolworths Cafeteria in Sauchiehall St. My dad lodged with a Mrs Eccles in the Gorbals, they had fond memories of their stay in Glasgow, however my dad is no longer with us sadly he died 21 years ago. Love to hear from anyone who knew him or mum. My appeal is not yet thru tho I am trying to research my grandads family from Meenmore in County Donegal. I have it on good authority that his parents ran a pawn shop and it was sited at the entrance to St John's chapel, any information on this would be fantastic. Also, my uncle, mums brother Anthony Quinn lived in the area and I would be grateful for any information on him. I do know he died on this there but I would like to know where he is buried, their other sister Annie Tinney lived in Millerston rd at one time and my mum stayed with her till she came back to Ireland to get married. Hope somebody will be able to shed some light on my queries, I just came across this site today be default and started reading I knew all the street names from hearing mum and dad talk of them. Look forward to hearing from someone.

I think the Vennie that Millie Jordan is talking about in Caley Road was run by an English guy called Chris, he had a helper there called Sally who had thick black hair. They were backed by a group called the Simon Community who were trying to help us deprived kids. I remember it well though as I spent nearly every day there. They started running discos on a Friday night. Our guests included, Frankie Murray, Tiddsy Screen, Johnny Boy McClelland and big Mick Tolan. All in all we had a great time even though we did break a few bones on the swings. I loved it and wouldn't mind a second chance at it. Although I am probably less fit than I was then. The names were Hugh and Anne (both deceased now)and they had three of a family, Marion, Sally and Connie. I also remember calling into a local pub which was close to the street and it may have been called "The Wee Mill" and it had some connection to a player called McBride who had played for Celtic. My Granny, Mary McGuire, lived for a short time in Sandyfaulds Pend at the start of the war. A free standing house with a huge garage. It must have been an old Car-hire, or a Funeral Undertakers originally. It was across the pend from Walter Boyce's coal rea. Does anyone know anything about the pend buildings? Have photos? Incidently my Granny ran minoges and was a friend of Alice Cullen's.

Today, 23rd March is the anniversary of the death of Joseph Hughes (George Cross) whose story can be read on the Gorbals People section of this website. Here is a poem I have written to honour this brave young soldier. JOSEPH HUGHES – G C (FOR A HERO WAS HE) Joseph Hughes gave his life for his Service Corps ‘Brothers’ His the ultimate price to save so many others. Just a lad from the Gorbals how proud we should be of that brave young soldier for a hero was he. His fear and his pain we can only surmise how he must have suffered in his sacrifice. With esteem his name spoken as it always will be by his comrades-in-arms of the RASC. In death then young Joseph his actions rewarded for his gallantry a George Cross awarded. His body lies cold far away, in the earth but let’s bring his soul home to the place of his birth. Each act of remembrance brings Joseph back home to the land of his fathers his spirit will come. So let’s always remember with a thought, or a prayer Joseph Hughes from the Gorbals and his courage so rare. © ELSA J BEATTIE

Went to St John's school round about 1946 then on to Holyrood Annexe 1952 to 1956. Used to go in to the Kiosk cafe round about 1955, then also went in to Hell's Kitchen cafe, the guy that owned was called Bill, he and his sister Margaret? ran the cafe. He used to give me money on a Friday to buy records for the juke box. Lots of good memories from the Gorbals, wonder if any of my old friends are still about?

F.A.O. Isabella Henriques, I remember all the shops you spoke about, it was my job to go up to the fish shop on a Friday night to get our supper. Mary Pirries was like an Alladins cave to us all with all the sweets. The old church on Cavendish Street and Pollokshaws road still stands where it was years ago it is now made into a homeless unit. Abbotsford Place school has been boarded up for years but I see that there was a sign up in it for office lets when I went past on the bus. It is a listed building and cannot be demolished. They have just finished building brand new houses just accross the road from where Mary Pirries was, I think there was only one close in that building if I can remember as I born and stayed just around the corner in Salisbury Street up until 1956 when I was married from there. Do you remember George who had a dairy there and also the dairy in Cumberland St. called McIndoes were they sold the milk straight from the metal urns?

Does anyone remember going to the Portland Irish Dancing. (I think it must have been in South Portland St) It was really good, especially cos other dancehalls like the locarno, electric gardens, maryland and majestic all closed at around 11.00p.m. The Portland didn't close till after 2.00. I used to feel like a dirty stop out then. I well remember coming in from the Locarno with my boyfriend, and my mother making me go back out to the Portland with my wee sister Mary -she wouldn't have got going otherwise, so I dutifully went, and had a great time. The Swing was a dance, fairly took the wind out of you. Music was Showbands. Great memories - us girls all came home together laughing. Can anyone rememebr the Vennie - Adventure Playground in Surrey Street. No Health and Safety then - great fun, swinging from ropes so high, and tyres.God help my white sandshoes. Jumping from dykes, onto on old mattresses.

If the Kiosk you refer to was on the corner of Gorbals and Cleland St then I do remember your family. I'm not sure if there were tables, or if it was just a carry-out. I do remember going there every Saturday in summer when I was a little girl, carrying a glass jug and having it filled with ice cream. If any of your family are still in the business I wonder if there is still a company in Glasgow (or anywhere) that still make "double nougat" wafers. I would love to buy a carton for my grandkids. FAO Libby McMillan Australia, The Calton is another area in Glasgow which is across the bridge from the Gorbals on the eastend of Glasgow. The famous "Barras" is there it opens every Saturday and Sunday and people from all walks of life visit it when they come to Glasgow. You can get practically everything from a needle to an Anchor there. There is a shop on the London Road called Glickmans that sell every sweet under the sun and they are on the internet and the media has written a few stories about the family business. If you continue along the Gallowgate you come to the famous Celtic football club where the Celtic team who were nicknamed the Lisbons Lions because they won the cup played there. Hope this helps you. I used to live in 60 Kidston Street. My name was Mildred Rorke, and had a sister Mary Rorke. I remember with good memories of how I could just cross the road to Camden St School. Games had their seasons, skates on the bumpy roads, bikes, whips and peeires, beds on the streets, playing schools in the closes, knitting, crocheting, also scraps. Playing hooses, and shops in the backcourts. We also had a jumble sale each year, and we also had a show, where the mums helped with the costumes. All the money went to Pat Roller of the Daily Record (who I thought was a real man!!) I also remember older girls dressed in jiving gear, dancing and all the people crowding round them. I also remember a cafe in Crown St, across from the Hi Hi, where we would go on Fri night with our pocket money, buy hot peas and a macallum. Next door was a bag wash, later to become a wash-a-mat. However my mam used the steamie in Rutherglen Rd, and as we got older we went with her and used the public baths - we had previously used the tin bath under the bed, (in the recess) which doubled up as our toy box. Of course the bed had been on bricks to allow this.

I remember the Crown Picture Hall, The Palace Cinema, which was next to the Citizens. Citizens is now and also the Calder which was in Govanhill. My mum used to buy our weekly shopping in Cumberland Street; where all the mams went and humped it all back home. Daily she would use a dairy called Mrs Hoanze (spelling prob wrong) and also a Mrs Scott. Mrs Scott was opened very late and she used to have a wonderful "penny Tray" and sold us penny glasses of juices from old washed fish paste jars??!! some of my pals were Eliz McLaughlin, Linda Grant, Kathleen McLafferty, Marylne Greer.

I can vaguely remember Dixons Blazes, cos our house looked right onto it - I used to think that that was "the bad fire". Long after I can remember a tale of the Molls Myre and pixies taking people way, and our mams telling us not to go over to the old site - Do you think it stopped us - I can remember a lovely summer where us weans had a ball, black (supposed to be white) sand shoes. Faces filthy, but I can remember being happy and looking forward to the next day. I also remember going to the chippy - we had a choice - the Havana in Caledonia Rd or the Deep Sea in Crown Street. My mother always went to the Deep Sea. After our dinner in the summer the mothers would be out chatting. that meant we could stay up late. We moved to Hutchiesontown Court in 1966 and can still remember the newness and the feeling I had then. Things and places have changed, but people are the same and its good to exchange memories.

I was born at 17 Thistle Street, my mother Mabel Elliott, died there in 1950 from T.B. my mothers parents all lived in the gorbals, my mothers family, brothers, Charlie, Billy, Gilbert, her sisters Jeannie, married to Dick of Dicks wallpapers, Sheila and Cathy.

Cathy died in the sixties, I understand my mothers family were hawkers, my fathers brother, Denis died in the fifties in a motorcycle accident we lived, next to the pen in Thistle Street my mother and her sisters worked in the kipper store I believe behind 17 Thistle Street. My uncle Charlie did well for himself I understand he died in the middle of last year, he was probably worth a million or so when he died, I believe he was also involved in the city council somewhere.

A family in no 17 used to look after us while my father was at work I believe their name was Thompson, I remember my dad coming home in the mornings and his first job was to kill the rats that were stuck to an old suitcase lid, recently I was in the Gorbals whilst they were building the new hotel in Ballater Street and one of the lads climbed up the pole and took down the Thistle Street sign for me I intend to make a sign for my home with it,

I was very young in those days but that, with the death of my mother so young and us so young has caused me severe anxiety problems in later life, so get your thinking caps on, I would be really greateful for any photographs around about the very early fifties to help in my recuperation. Thank you, Denis
