This was a great read for me..I was born in 1965 in the Gorbals but that is all I know..I am looking for anyone who may have info on Euphemnia McIntyre (deceased) children: Ken, Francis, Helen and Eric....I went over in 1988 to see where I was from and it was gone...I cried feeling very displaced...and now I've found out that the Gorbals are back and what a testament to the Scottish ..they will survive anything....I am so proud that Glasgow has taken a historical Scottish icon and made it be something else again, congratulations, cheers

I was brought up in Salisbury St, continuation of Warwick St. Some people have been asking about St. Johns infant school, the main gates were in Warwick St later called Nicholson St. and the side gates took you into the lane were we crossed to go over to the chapel. The boys and girls stayed there until you made your Holy Communion and then the girls went to the all girls school at Tradeston St still called St. Johns and the boys went to St. Johns boys school in Portugal st across from the chapel. After we did our qualifing exams the ones who passed their exams went to Holyrood in Dixon Road which at the time I went was a senior secondary the others went to Our Lady and St. Margarets down in Kinning Park and the ones who didn't manage to pass their exams stayed on at St. Johns but in a different building called the advanced division. Pupils from other schools in the Gorbals who never passed their exams went there also. St. Johns school still stands were it was when I ! was young (69) but I don't know what it is. The old fire station that was along the road from it has been made into a homeless center (Hamish Allen). Their was a new St. Johns primary school built on Nelson St when they demolished St.Johns chapel. My maiden name is Welsh.

Could anyone help me with a real long shot. My paternal grandmother was from the gorbals, or at least her family was. The only information we have on her is: Her name was Margaret Toner, she had a son out of marriage in January 1950 named him Gerard and had him christened in St Francis. She stayed in either Oregan Street, or out in Torphin Crescent. The god parent at the christening was Elizabeth Toner, we don't know if this was a sister or cousin etc. There was no name given as the father. Her son Gerard was given up for fostering in circa 1952, the pair were never reunited again. Gerard, was my father (brilliant) but sadly died couple of years ago. I am looking for any information at all on my paternal grandparents, or their family. I have my own family now, but still wonder every day about the family I have some place but have never met. If you can help me in any small way I would be extremely grateful.

I lived 2 up in 15a Abbotsford Place , a sub let, as a kid. One thing I always remember is the wee crisp factory down a pen in South Portland St. You could go in there and buy a poke of hot crisps just like you could chips. I went to Abbostsford School from 1949-1953 when we moved out to near the Shaws. I still remember the names of many of my class mates. These included Ronnie Higgins, Thomas Anderson, Malcolm, James Rutherford, Duncan Lamont, Arnold LTart to name but a few. My mates outside school were Johnny Boy Love, John Brown Arthur McGowan and Tommy Brady. I remember as a kid one of the highlights was watching the fights out of our back window as the Clock Bar closed.

Is there anyone out there that knew my father James William Liddell, he was born on the 17/06/1939 or 1940 in Gorbals? I do not know much about my father as he died on the 31/01/1979 when I was 3 mths old. The only info I have on him is that he worked on the trawlers, and a week b4 he died there was an inquest into the death of a young man that sailed with him, who jumped over board due to marital problems. He had a brother that worked as a Postmaster in the General Office in Glasgow and a sister that was a midwife at Glasgow Hospital. If anyone can help me please contact me.

Hello, this is for kathleen Well now, me name is Ikey Moses. I’m a chap that’s very wellknown I live in the city of Gloucester, got a business of me own I own a drapers shop, me name’s upon the top and I’m doing a rattling business in me old cloth shop. I sell me corduroy-suls, they’re the best American tweed I sell me sheets and blankets, at a rare old speed For now, a man come in the other day, a suit of clothes to buy I give him a suit for twelve and six - “Try them on for size” He tried ’em on to a very well fit only ready to walk away I tipped him on the shoulder, saying “Your money you have to pay” He turned around and looked at me and then his fist he drew He doubled me up in the corner, say - “That’s the place for you” I shouted for a cop, he said “You’d better stop Or you’ll soon be having a funeral in your old cloth shop". Only one other example of this song is found in Roud - Maurice Ogg collected it in the early 1970s ’from a couple of old ladies sat in a pub in Lincolnshire' - though I’m sure I’ve heard it elsewhere ... but can’t recall where or from whom. Jim McBride collected a version which he was going to include in the 1988 Innishowen Singers’ Circle booklet, but didn’t for some reason. Here’s his comment and the song text: This song was a favourite of the late John Grant (Daniels) who enjoyed life to the full and died suddenly in April of 1987. John’s infectious good humour and light-hearted approach to living inspired all those who knew him. Even though he was advanced in years and in poor health he still insisted on struggling up the hill from his ’demountable’ in Foffanagh to catch the minibus to the town on several nights a week where he regaled many’s a friend and indeed strangers with his wit, his stories and especially his songs. The Brass Rail Bar hasn’t been the same since his demise. The song simply relates the tale of an Irishman who opened a second-hand cloth shop in ’Paddy’s Market’ in the Saltmarket in Glasgow. Indeed Paddy’s Market still existed thirty years ago and for all we know may still exist.

I am still trying to find my relatives up in Scotland after about 2 years with no clues it's as if my father and the family never existed, I find this very sad dad was always happy and full of fun and anyone that met him thought he was great. However, is there some dark secret that no one wants me to find out, no one has come forward with my request for help in finding them. My father was Ramsay MacDonald from Portugal Street Glasgow, his mother died when he was seven this would be around 1932. His aunt and uncle brought him up they were Peter & Grace Jackson who lived in Portugal Street, if anyone does know of anyone that might have known this family please get in touch asap? I know he has a cousin up in Perth called Jessie and I have written twice but she hasn't answered my letters, I can't help wondering why. I would have been a very young girl the last time I saw her but would dearly love to meet her again thanks for reading this Jean.

I remember during the 1960s walking past the "buroo" near the broomielaw where there was a big poster advertising passeges to austrialia for £10. I know quite a few people from the gorbals took the offer up and I have often wondered how they got on...did you go and come back? or did you stay there and just got on with it?...some of your stories would be nice to hear! A whole generation of gorbals people emigrated, what exactly happened to them and where are they now? Do they still feel homesick or has life in a "better country" made them happier? There is a prize for the best story...a penny dainty!

I was born in a single end at the corner of lawmoor st. and caledonia road. The memories of living in the gorbals are endless and the gorbals anecdotes sometimes leave me day dreaming about the countless adventures in the first seventeen years of my life. I grew up and was educated in the streets of the gorbals (hutchesontown) and would not trade that for anything. Sometimes I wonder about Neil McFadyen and all the others too numerous to mention.

Hi, my great, great grandparents originated from Gorbals. I sent for their marriage certificate (from Scotland's People) however it was a copy of a parochial register which gave no information other than the fact they married in 1848. As I want to trace my ancestors further back does anyone know how I can achieve this?

I was born in 223 Thistle Street top floor 1947. I left the Gorbals when I was 6 to move to Ibrox. I have few memories but two that stick in my mind are the midden men shewing us up the stairs while they emptied the bins, the rats that came from behind were the size of cats (probably) not I was six. I went once a week to Rosebuds with twins who stayed in the next close and I can still feel the distaste of their older sister who had to walk us there. I wish I could remember names. I had a brother Gordon, my parents were Flora and Matt (Nobby) Clark. I believe my fathers family lived near by but I don't know them. My mothers family Gordon lived in McKinlay Street. There was subsidence in their back courts and access was blocked. I can remember being lifted out of the window with my brother to get my photo taken but could not understand why we could not play there. My jeely pieces in Thistle Street were flung down in brown bags to the back court. I've enjoyed reading all that everybody had to say and I'll be visiting the site regularly.

My name is Jessie Walker, I was born in 5 Thistle Street in 1933 and left to elope in 1952. I went to Buchan Street school and then went onto Adelphi Terrace. My maws name was katie Walker who married in later years to Boaby White. I left school and went to work in Masseys the grocers. People I remember from school is: Mildred Steen, Fae Duffy, Nan Connelly, and Agnes Turnbull. I loved living in the Gorbals it was a great community and everyone looked out for each other. We were very poor but always clean and happy. I remember being sent into the toon for ribs and a ham haugh for sundays dinner and some whelks and mussels. I loved going to Paddys market and prayed every week that I would get a kilt as all my pals had one. I eventually got one years later but they were out of fashion and trousers had been introduced for the wumman. I got a job as a clippy on the buses and this is were I met my late husband Jimmy Cameron. I remember cochranes, Wullie Wilson the butcher in Crown street. My memories of living in the Gorbals are the length of 5 motorways and I'll always be proud to say "I'm a Gorbals lassie".

With all the talk about Vioxx does anyone remember Dr. Emma Gibb? She had her surgery at the corner of Sandyfaulds Street and Cumberland Street. No appointments necessary. Just go to the office and take a seat. If you needed a housecall, you delivered a note to Birrell's the Chemist and it was passed on to her and she came to the house. Anyway, she used to give out these tablets (pills) called "M and B's". They were used for everything - from a headache to virtually anything you complained about. I wonder what the initials "M and B" stood for. Anyone out there have any thoughts on this?

If you went to school in the Gorbals up to the 1960's you were probably on the receiving end of the belt, or leather tawse, which were made by a saddler in lochgelly. One teacher I knew had three such belts and if he did not like you he would then use belt number three which was extremely thick and heavy. But there was a way to combat the belt hurting you...you had to bend your fingertips just slightly before the belt hit your hand and it was only the fingertips that got the pain. My classes at saint lukes and bonnies were all a wee bit wild so nearly everyone got the belt and we really felt no fear of it but newer kids joining the school did and would often "hiv a good greet" after getting the belt but the secret was "no tae greet" and show the teachers you weren't at all afraid of them. It baffles me now how teachers can control wild glasgow street kids now...the belt may now be considered barbaric but then it was essential for keeping order. I got the belt once for! not knowing my 12 times table off by heart...I soon learnt it and even to this day I can do sums very quickly in my head, something the modern generation can't do without a calculator...so thirty years on I look back and think the belt was good for me!

Do you know Daniel Allen? Could you ask him if he knows of a girl called Darryl from Morecambe (born 1967 to Vera). He had his own family in Scotland and I have never wanted to get in the way. I hope enough time has passed now. My mother did look after his sisters baby girl Tanya when I was four and I remember her with love. He is my long lost Pa and I would dearly love to see him again. Please email me info@quayside-art.co.uk with any information.

I was born at 11 Gorbals Street. Moved to Sandyfaulds Street where I grew up. Went to St Francis primary. Stayed in the close next to Nisbits Dairy can still remember Mr Nisbit. We were at 92 almost facing Flo Hennigans shop next to the pen. In the close next to Nisbits were the Boyles and the Spencers amoung others. My Da's name was Frank Connolly and he hung around with our uncle Danny Mc Cauley (Stick Mc Cauley). They were a bit of a pair in their younger day but have been gone quite a while now. My mother's mother was Cathie Mc Cauley and she lived in Nicholson Street right facing the Bond as I remember the men and their horse and carts delivering the barrels there. I loved growing up in the Gorbals went to Holyrood got expelled and went to Bonnies where I met up again with Colin Mac and Commy, Jim Feeney, and the rest of the boys who came from St Lukes/St Francis. We got a new hose at Waddell Court but lost some of the joy there. Ah well such is life keep up the good work and keep sending those memories.

Colin Mcfarlane, John Mulligan, the Pillans, Danny Fullerton, sadly remember, the mcGrorys, Rab and Martin Shannon, St Lukes, the tiny Rebel Cumbie, the Toddler Cumbie, Jim Feeney, Peter Comiskey, wee Frankie fae Bonnies, big Scud, wee Bub, drinking in the Lizzie flat stairs, standing at Anns Fry or Marios chippy and always hoping that something better might happen. Fond memories of good and bad times done with good people around.

Passed through the Gorbals this week with hundreds of new flats being erected,I went into the showroom of one builder and asked how much they were. The women said for the first 28 days after completion they had to be held for "local people", i.e. people on the housing waiting list or first time buyers. I asked again the price and was told ...around £120,00 for a one bedroom flat, rising to more than £140,000 for two beds and "superior" de-lux flat for more than £175,000. I just wondered how many local people could afford such prices and it did strike me that the Gorbals is no longer associated with poverty but the rich middle classes, many of whom use the new Gorbals flats to rent out or as second homes. once there were old bogeys parked in the streets, now there are mercedes and porches, and as one old guy said to me in the Laurieston bar in Eglinton street,"Yi'd hiv tae be a millionaire tae live in the gorbals noo!" so if you want to go back and live in the area you'd better start doing the lottery now!

I was born in the Gorbals in 1951, at 29 Lawmoor Street. I left Glasgow in 1959 and moved to Corby. Sandy Warren - I saw your message and I remember your uncle Lawrie, he was friends of my Ma and Da. Infact, I remember he came to Corby on at least one occasion for a visit. I also remember my Ma, while we were "up the road" for a holiday (probably during the Glesga Fair) taking my brother Eddie and I with her to visit your Da, Jimmie. I remember my Ma buying us sweeties to keep us quiet while she and your Da talked about old times. I would love to hear from you if you get a chance. My grandmother Anne Pearson Smith was born in the Gorbals in 1901. Her brother was William and her sister Barbara. Her family came to Canada when she was 9 or 10. Nana passed away in 1984, never having had a chance to come back home to her beloved Scotland. I will always remember her telling me of how as a child in the Gorbals she would yell up to her mother "hey Ma! throw me down a sandwich!" it used to fascinate me as a child, as I could never imagine this refined lady yelling anything, at any time (or how the sandwich survived the drop to the street below!)..:0) Greetings from Canada, with loving memory of my grandmother Anne, Christine.
