This was a great read for me..I was born in 1965 in the Gorbals but that is all I know..I am looking for anyone who may have info on Euphemnia McIntyre (deceased) children: Ken, Francis, Helen and Eric....I went over in 1988 to see where I was from and it was gone...I cried feeling very displaced...and now I've found out that the Gorbals are back and what a testament to the Scottish ..they will survive anything....I am so proud that Glasgow has taken a historical Scottish icon and made it be something else again, congratulations, cheers

I was brought up in Salisbury St, continuation of Warwick St. Some people have been asking about St. Johns infant school, the main gates were in Warwick St later called Nicholson St. and the side gates took you into the lane were we crossed to go over to the chapel. The boys and girls stayed there until you made your Holy Communion and then the girls went to the all girls school at Tradeston St still called St. Johns and the boys went to St. Johns boys school in Portugal st across from the chapel. After we did our qualifing exams the ones who passed their exams went to Holyrood in Dixon Road which at the time I went was a senior secondary the others went to Our Lady and St. Margarets down in Kinning Park and the ones who didn't manage to pass their exams stayed on at St. Johns but in a different building called the advanced division. Pupils from other schools in the Gorbals who never passed their exams went there also. St. Johns school still stands were it was when I ! was young (69) but I don't know what it is. The old fire station that was along the road from it has been made into a homeless center (Hamish Allen). Their was a new St. Johns primary school built on Nelson St when they demolished St.Johns chapel. My maiden name is Welsh.

Could anyone help me with a real long shot. My paternal grandmother was from the gorbals, or at least her family was. The only information we have on her is: Her name was Margaret Toner, she had a son out of marriage in January 1950 named him Gerard and had him christened in St Francis. She stayed in either Oregan Street, or out in Torphin Crescent. The god parent at the christening was Elizabeth Toner, we don't know if this was a sister or cousin etc. There was no name given as the father. Her son Gerard was given up for fostering in circa 1952, the pair were never reunited again. Gerard, was my father (brilliant) but sadly died couple of years ago. I am looking for any information at all on my paternal grandparents, or their family. I have my own family now, but still wonder every day about the family I have some place but have never met. If you can help me in any small way I would be extremely grateful.

I lived 2 up in 15a Abbotsford Place , a sub let, as a kid. One thing I always remember is the wee crisp factory down a pen in South Portland St. You could go in there and buy a poke of hot crisps just like you could chips. I went to Abbostsford School from 1949-1953 when we moved out to near the Shaws. I still remember the names of many of my class mates. These included Ronnie Higgins, Thomas Anderson, Malcolm, James Rutherford, Duncan Lamont, Arnold LTart to name but a few. My mates outside school were Johnny Boy Love, John Brown Arthur McGowan and Tommy Brady. I remember as a kid one of the highlights was watching the fights out of our back window as the Clock Bar closed.

Is there anyone out there that knew my father James William Liddell, he was born on the 17/06/1939 or 1940 in Gorbals? I do not know much about my father as he died on the 31/01/1979 when I was 3 mths old. The only info I have on him is that he worked on the trawlers, and a week b4 he died there was an inquest into the death of a young man that sailed with him, who jumped over board due to marital problems. He had a brother that worked as a Postmaster in the General Office in Glasgow and a sister that was a midwife at Glasgow Hospital. If anyone can help me please contact me.

Hello, this is for kathleen Well now, me name is Ikey Moses. I’m a chap that’s very wellknown I live in the city of Gloucester, got a business of me own I own a drapers shop, me name’s upon the top and I’m doing a rattling business in me old cloth shop. I sell me corduroy-suls, they’re the best American tweed I sell me sheets and blankets, at a rare old speed For now, a man come in the other day, a suit of clothes to buy I give him a suit for twelve and six - “Try them on for size” He tried ’em on to a very well fit only ready to walk away I tipped him on the shoulder, saying “Your money you have to pay” He turned around and looked at me and then his fist he drew He doubled me up in the corner, say - “That’s the place for you” I shouted for a cop, he said “You’d better stop Or you’ll soon be having a funeral in your old cloth shop". Only one other example of this song is found in Roud - Maurice Ogg collected it in the early 1970s ’from a couple of old ladies sat in a pub in Lincolnshire' - though I’m sure I’ve heard it elsewhere ... but can’t recall where or from whom. Jim McBride collected a version which he was going to include in the 1988 Innishowen Singers’ Circle booklet, but didn’t for some reason. Here’s his comment and the song text: This song was a favourite of the late John Grant (Daniels) who enjoyed life to the full and died suddenly in April of 1987. John’s infectious good humour and light-hearted approach to living inspired all those who knew him. Even though he was advanced in years and in poor health he still insisted on struggling up the hill from his ’demountable’ in Foffanagh to catch the minibus to the town on several nights a week where he regaled many’s a friend and indeed strangers with his wit, his stories and especially his songs. The Brass Rail Bar hasn’t been the same since his demise. The song simply relates the tale of an Irishman who opened a second-hand cloth shop in ’Paddy’s Market’ in the Saltmarket in Glasgow. Indeed Paddy’s Market still existed thirty years ago and for all we know may still exist.

I am still trying to find my relatives up in Scotland after about 2 years with no clues it's as if my father and the family never existed, I find this very sad dad was always happy and full of fun and anyone that met him thought he was great. However, is there some dark secret that no one wants me to find out, no one has come forward with my request for help in finding them. My father was Ramsay MacDonald from Portugal Street Glasgow, his mother died when he was seven this would be around 1932. His aunt and uncle brought him up they were Peter & Grace Jackson who lived in Portugal Street, if anyone does know of anyone that might have known this family please get in touch asap? I know he has a cousin up in Perth called Jessie and I have written twice but she hasn't answered my letters, I can't help wondering why. I would have been a very young girl the last time I saw her but would dearly love to meet her again thanks for reading this Jean.

I remember during the 1960s walking past the "buroo" near the broomielaw where there was a big poster advertising passeges to austrialia for £10. I know quite a few people from the gorbals took the offer up and I have often wondered how they got on...did you go and come back? or did you stay there and just got on with it?...some of your stories would be nice to hear! A whole generation of gorbals people emigrated, what exactly happened to them and where are they now? Do they still feel homesick or has life in a "better country" made them happier? There is a prize for the best story...a penny dainty!

I was born in a single end at the corner of lawmoor st. and caledonia road. The memories of living in the gorbals are endless and the gorbals anecdotes sometimes leave me day dreaming about the countless adventures in the first seventeen years of my life. I grew up and was educated in the streets of the gorbals (hutchesontown) and would not trade that for anything. Sometimes I wonder about Neil McFadyen and all the others too numerous to mention.

Hi, my great, great grandparents originated from Gorbals. I sent for their marriage certificate (from Scotland's People) however it was a copy of a parochial register which gave no information other than the fact they married in 1848. As I want to trace my ancestors further back does anyone know how I can achieve this?

I was born in 223 Thistle Street top floor 1947. I left the Gorbals when I was 6 to move to Ibrox. I have few memories but two that stick in my mind are the midden men shewing us up the stairs while they emptied the bins, the rats that came from behind were the size of cats (probably) not I was six. I went once a week to Rosebuds with twins who stayed in the next close and I can still feel the distaste of their older sister who had to walk us there. I wish I could remember names. I had a brother Gordon, my parents were Flora and Matt (Nobby) Clark. I believe my fathers family lived near by but I don't know them. My mothers family Gordon lived in McKinlay Street. There was subsidence in their back courts and access was blocked. I can remember being lifted out of the window with my brother to get my photo taken but could not understand why we could not play there. My jeely pieces in Thistle Street were flung down in brown bags to the back court. I've enjoyed reading all that everybody had to say and I'll be visiting the site regularly.

My name is Jessie Walker, I was born in 5 Thistle Street in 1933 and left to elope in 1952. I went to Buchan Street school and then went onto Adelphi Terrace. My maws name was katie Walker who married in later years to Boaby White. I left school and went to work in Masseys the grocers. People I remember from school is: Mildred Steen, Fae Duffy, Nan Connelly, and Agnes Turnbull. I loved living in the Gorbals it was a great community and everyone looked out for each other. We were very poor but always clean and happy. I remember being sent into the toon for ribs and a ham haugh for sundays dinner and some whelks and mussels. I loved going to Paddys market and prayed every week that I would get a kilt as all my pals had one. I eventually got one years later but they were out of fashion and trousers had been introduced for the wumman. I got a job as a clippy on the buses and this is were I met my late husband Jimmy Cameron. I remember cochranes, Wullie Wilson the butcher in Crown street. My memories of living in the Gorbals are the length of 5 motorways and I'll always be proud to say "I'm a Gorbals lassie".

With all the talk about Vioxx does anyone remember Dr. Emma Gibb? She had her surgery at the corner of Sandyfaulds Street and Cumberland Street. No appointments necessary. Just go to the office and take a seat. If you needed a housecall, you delivered a note to Birrell's the Chemist and it was passed on to her and she came to the house. Anyway, she used to give out these tablets (pills) called "M and B's". They were used for everything - from a headache to virtually anything you complained about. I wonder what the initials "M and B" stood for. Anyone out there have any thoughts on this?

If you went to school in the Gorbals up to the 1960's you were probably on the receiving end of the belt, or leather tawse, which were made by a saddler in lochgelly. One teacher I knew had three such belts and if he did not like you he would then use belt number three which was extremely thick and heavy. But there was a way to combat the belt hurting you...you had to bend your fingertips just slightly before the belt hit your hand and it was only the fingertips that got the pain. My classes at saint lukes and bonnies were all a wee bit wild so nearly everyone got the belt and we really felt no fear of it but newer kids joining the school did and would often "hiv a good greet" after getting the belt but the secret was "no tae greet" and show the teachers you weren't at all afraid of them. It baffles me now how teachers can control wild glasgow street kids now...the belt may now be considered barbaric but then it was essential for keeping order. I got the belt once for! not knowing my 12 times table off by heart...I soon learnt it and even to this day I can do sums very quickly in my head, something the modern generation can't do without a calculator...so thirty years on I look back and think the belt was good for me!

I hope enough time has passed now. My mother did look after his sisters baby girl Tanya when I was four and I remember her with love. He is my long lost Pa and I would dearly love to see him again. I was born at 11 Gorbals Street. Moved to Sandyfaulds Street where I grew up. Went to St Francis primary. Stayed in the close next to Nisbits Dairy can still remember Mr Nisbit. We were at 92 almost facing Flo Hennigans shop next to the pen. In the close next to Nisbits were the Boyles and the Spencers amoung others. My Da's name was Frank Connolly and he hung around with our uncle Danny Mc Cauley (Stick Mc Cauley). They were a bit of a pair in their younger day but have been gone quite a while now. My mother's mother was Cathie Mc Cauley and she lived in Nicholson Street right facing the Bond as I remember the men and their horse and carts delivering the barrels there. I loved growing up in the Gorbals went to Holyrood got expelled and went to Bonnies where I met up again with Colin Mac and Commy, Jim Feeney, and the rest of the boys who came from St Lukes/St Francis. We got a new hose at Waddell Court but lost some of the joy there. Ah well such is life keep up the good work and keep sending those memories.

Passed through the Gorbals this week with hundreds of new flats being erected,I went into the showroom of one builder and asked how much they were. The women said for the first 28 days after completion they had to be held for "local people", i.e. people on the housing waiting list or first time buyers. I asked again the price and was told ...around £120,00 for a one bedroom flat, rising to more than £140,000 for two beds and "superior" de-lux flat for more than £175,000. I just wondered how many local people could afford such prices and it did strike me that the Gorbals is no longer associated with poverty but the rich middle classes, many of whom use the new Gorbals flats to rent out or as second homes. once there were old bogeys parked in the streets, now there are mercedes and porches, and as one old guy said to me in the Laurieston bar in Eglinton street,"Yi'd hiv tae be a millionaire tae live in the gorbals noo!" so if you want to go back and live in the area you'd better start doing the lottery now!

I will always remember her telling me of how as a child in the Gorbals she would yell up to her mother "hey Ma! throw me down a sandwich!" it used to fascinate me as a child, as I could never imagine this refined lady yelling anything, at any time (or how the sandwich survived the drop to the street below!)..:0) Greetings from Canada, with loving memory of my grandmother Anne, Christine.

I was born in Warwick St in 1947. As you all know it changed it's name to Nicholson St. I have been looking into some off the details about my old street. Now anybody from Bedford up must have known the wee green grocer's Ina Martin's. Her shop was just across from the Dodds family there window boxes and all around his window's where all painted RED WHITE AND BLUE. Is that a clue? Now this is a good one - does anybody remember the C5 Rambling Club started by the great Rev Jeff Shaw? We used to meet at the corner off Nicholson St/Bedford St and we used to go away for the day Magic. And I remember the claty dozen Tam Smith was the leader off. One day during a storm a chimney came down and killed the girl from 202 LOW down was killed, and the first person to go to her help was Tam Smith. He took of his jacket to stop the rain from wetting her, the whole st knew the lassie. As in the Gorbols all for one and one for all. As when anybody passed away a member off the family would go round the doors for a collection to give them a half desent send off. We where all poor but clean and happy. A wee joke before I go. The people in the Gorbols wanted to twin with the people in the Bronx New York and the gangsters in the Bronx said no way the people in the Gorbols are to tough for us. I went to Adelphi and my primary was Buchan st I was born 1947. Take care and be proud as I am off the old place xx Alex.

Hi does anyone remember the fruit and veg. shop called Murphy`s? My mother Jane Berry worked their at the weekends she was 9 at the time would someone know what street this shop was on and any other info? Also she recalls a great event in her life; as a youngster who had such a passion for Celtic ran on to the pitch at parkhead just as Charlie Tully was about to take a corner kick, she noticed a puddle at the corner, she ran on whipped off her shirt and laid it on the ground for Charlie to stand on. Charlie then took the shot and scored. It was a memorable day for her and she proudly went home with the shirt and Charlie`s footprint. Her love of football and Charlie Tully still lives on, does anyone remember this?

The "patter" is what I miss most about the Gorbals. No matter how fed up you were there was always someone with a story or joke that would cheer you up. For example, I would be walking through Gorbals Cross and out of the blue a wee man would shout "How's it gaun?" And after exchanging a bit of banter he would say.."Did yee hear aboot the two vegeterians that got married?" You would reply, "No whit happened?" And the reply was "There was a big turnup (turnip) at the wedding!" BOOM! BOOOM! Hummour is what kept most people going, and was a real driving force that made a real difference to our lives - who needed valuim when you had the great Gorbals patter!!!

I have been trying to research any info about my grandfather, Thaddeus (TED) Lavin . He was born at 27 Gilmour st in 1906 and served before and during WW2 in the royal marines. As far as I know, he had a signwriting shop in Gorbals street until the early sixties, when he died suddenly. One story about him is that he rescued a boy from the Clyde (only for the lad, sadly to pass away in hospital) for which he was awarded a civic medal for bravery; no easy thing to do, jumping off that huge bridge that connects the Gorbals to the city centre! If anyone out there has any info on him, I'd be eternally grateful.

James & Thomas were killed in the war in 1914-1918. My Grandmother stayed in Portugal St, their son Archie stayed in 106 Nicholson St with his family. My great great Grandmother who was a Seamstress gave birth to a son at 40 Rose St Hutchensontown on Jan 6th 1871. Apparently there was a very extensive Cotton Factory owned by Somerville + sons there at this time. Maybe she and other Nairns had worked there? Does anyone studying family history have any knowledge about this sort of thing that they could share with me. I'm trying to build up a picture of what sort of lives they may have lead in this era and in this part of Glasgow. I'd be keen to hear from anyone who knows about this. Regards Kerry Nairn

My father Daniel McGougan was the local coalman with his horse & cart he also worked a second job at the Crownie Cinema in Crown Street facing Galloways Butchers in Clelland Street. My Grandpa & Grannie lived on the top flat of 21, we lived underneath I went to St Luke's then St Bonaventure's. I stayed there until we moved to Castlemilk when I was 17. I have 5 Brothers and 3 sisters. Daniel, Michael, James, Tony and Gerald and the girls were Rosemary, Bernadette and Sadie. I still have great memories of my time in Gorbals. If anyone remembers me or my family they can contact me at my email address. My Grandpa's name was also Daniel but everyone knew him as wee Danny, cheers.

Like to add more details to my search request for my close friend Jimmy Burns who lived south side of glasgow - I was born l932 at 371 Caledonia rd till early 50s. Jimmy lived in Clydebank with his wife Mary and 2 baby sons in the late 50's, he worked for Stevens shipyard as a cabinet maker and may have become a prison guard at Barlinnie Prison in the 60's. His brother Malcolm Burns was an optican in Glasgow. We have tried every way to find him without success and hope this site will be successful - he will be 69 or 70 now. Thank you for any information you may be able to give us. We have been in the U.S.A. since l958 but my memories of my childhood in the Gorbals are strong. Gerry Burke

I was born in Pollokshaws in the old tenements. I knew a couple of people from the Gorbals. Someone asked where to get some old pictures from. Mitchell Library has good old photographs and I have quite a lot. I paint old scenes from Glasgow, tenements, Barras, Gorbals, any area in fact. Although I live in England now, my family still live in the South Side, I try and get up there as much as possible. It will always be my first home.

Today, 23rd March is the anniversary of the death of Joseph Hughes (George Cross) whose story can be read on the Gorbals People section of this website. Here is a poem I have written to honour this brave young soldier. JOSEPH HUGHES – G C (FOR A HERO WAS HE) Joseph Hughes gave his life for his Service Corps ‘Brothers’ His the ultimate price to save so many others. Just a lad from the Gorbals how proud we should be of that brave young soldier for a hero was he. His fear and his pain we can only surmise how he must have suffered in his sacrifice. With esteem his name spoken as it always will be by his comrades-in-arms of the RASC. In death then young Joseph his actions rewarded for his gallantry a George Cross awarded. His body lies cold far away, in the earth but let’s bring his soul home to the place of his birth. Each act of remembrance brings Joseph back home to the land of his fathers his spirit will come. So let’s always remember with a thought, or a prayer Joseph Hughes from the Gorbals and his courage so rare. © ELSA J BEATTIE

As an ex Gorbalesian I thought it might be of interest to some of you to see how Glasgow looked in earlier times. So if you log on to Town Plans - Views 1580-1919 you`ll see how the Gorbals looked way back then. I was very surprised to see that there used to be a Railway Stn. at the top end of Main St.(later renamed Gorbals St.). I know exactly where it was, if anyone else can remember, It was that triangular piece of ground immediatley before the railway bridge. Does anyone remember the explosion that happened in the starch works in Surrey St? It was about 1940 or 41. Some people were killed but I can`t remember too much about it. Hope this helps somebody Cheers. BMCL.

I went to St. Francis junior at 5yrs old. Remember crying when my Ma left me, was my first day. Grew up at 79 Naburn St '1936. Dad worked at Dixons Blazes, he caught a sort of illness there and passed away at 49 yrs young. I remember going to the Paragon on Sat afternoon with my pals and we all had a penny bag of whelks even gave us a pin to yank them oot. We also made "Bogies" from a board, widden boax, nailed two sticks on tap fur "honnle bors", nailed a skate on the bottom. These came 50 years before Skate Boards. Used to get some Carbide from the street lighter and spit on it to see it bubble, got oan yer hauns it wiz gae soar. Went and caught some "Hudgies" dreeped aff the dykes, fell doon a "dunny" played "pever" hop scoatch, went to the Crownie and saw Flash Gordon. Went to the Barras tae get some bargains frae the wee "black johnnys" went to Barrowland Ballroom, alwas fights there between the Hammer Gang and San Toi. went to St.Francis and we had a Geog. Teacher Miss Graham, and the terror of the math class Mr. Connoly, he had a brush cut and Hitler moustache, whacked yer nuckles with his ruler and if the homework wasn't done, you got the strap! Had to run down to the front of the close with all our suitcases when we had air raids.

Another case is that of the Robertsons who were both sentenced to death in the 1940's for gassing their children on Eglinton street about 1942, both reporieved. Many thanks to those who have helped me with the case of Alexander CROSBIE, John LENNIE & John LYONS who was executed. Does anyone know if Mrs Lyons formerly Mary Crosbie is still alive? I am trying to find out if anyone knew my parents Seamus Houghton or Rita Houghton (Nee McPhearson) They lived in Sandifaulds street in the Gorbals. We later moved to Castlemilk and then to London. Sadly my mother died at the age of 45, and my father at 58. I would like to hear from any friends of theirs especially those who have a tale or two to tell.

I remember the Gorbals very well thanks to this site bring back the memories dan cronin and his mob trying to beat our family up in 320 Lawmoor st the chain and hatchet marks on the door even when we left there in the 50s! Rabbit eyes the polis screwing the shop in Lawmoor st stashing the gear in the middins and we would knock it off him he never touched campbells shop on the other side of lawmoor st the fights we had with the polis becuase of a stupid law that said two constituted a crowd. The fair fights in the glesca green j.l cumbie v b mc brig. Billy [initials only they know who they are if still alive] ended in a riot with knives hatchets I loved the Gorbals but it hated me I used a bayonet but I thank one person in this world before I die. I met a lovely lass from the calton [where I had many a good fight] she showed me a better life "put the knife away and come dancing" I loved her I feared the death penalty so the choice was easy but I think it must come back! I believed now when [lord carmon!] made it 7 years for razor slashing he was right on the mark mines went oot the windea. Yes I loved the Gorbals but I widnea bring my weans up in it but in all honesty there are worst places. Like others I started to wright about it I will keep trying but I may have run out of time sorry my younger cousin followed the advice I gave him [learn to fight] he did with avengence but he paid a price he may be doing well in the south of france with his belly dancing partner but he should have listened to the other advice I gave to him [if he can remember threw the pills and booze] give it up glad my younger bro followed my footsteps and gave jimmy up to follow me. To the person who wondering about the health issues I've had cancer 4 times when 52 53 55 56 my oolder bro has C when 68 years, young bro got C when 58, da died of C and we all lived near dixons, a wee bit o nostalgia da played his trumpet oot the windea in Lawmoor st every nerdea a "guid new year"of! course. Scots law said he was a begger for busking he got fined for busking to the person who liked his wulks off the man wi the barra, his name was Paddy Cryans his maw sold fruit aff the barra in Neaburn st. I married wee betty a great family hard workers and drinkers the person asking about Jimmy Boyle book he has wrote 4 the no mean city is in its "umpteenth edition so it would be easy to buy, cannea find emdea I knew I wonder how cousins Pat Boyle, Tommy Boyle who went to America I sent him a letter came back not known I didnea no Harry Boyle all from sandifauld st. Here's a poem I've just come across that might bring a smile to others. Oh, where is the Glasgow where I used to stay, white wally closes done up wi pipe clay where you knew everybody, first floor to third and to keep your door shut was considered absurd. Where are the weans that once played in the street? wi a jorrie, a peerie, a gird wi a cleet, can they still cadge a hudgie or dreep aff a dike? play hunch cuddy hunch, kick the can, an the like? And where is the wee shop where I used to buy a quarter o'totties, a tuppenny pie a bag o'broke biscuits, a wee sodie scone an'the wummin aye asked "how's yir maw gettin'oan? Where is the Tallie's that I knew so well? that wee corner shoap where they used to sell hot peas, a macallum, ice cream in a poke.. you knew they were Tallies the minute they spoke And where is the cludgie? that cosie wee cell the string fae the cistern, I remember it well where I sat wi a caun'le and studied the rags a win fur the Auld Firm, a loss for the Jags. Where is the tramcar that once did a turn doon Great Western Road, on the old Yoker run the conductress aye knew how tae deal wi the nyaff "if yir gaun, well comoan..if yir no, well gittaff" I think o' the days o'my tenement hame we've got fancy hooses, but they're jist no'the same I'll swap your gizunders, flyovers and jams, for a tuppenny ride on the old Partick trams. Gone is the Glesca that I used to know, Big Wullie, wee Shooie, the steamie, the Co the shilpit, wee bachle, the glaikit big dreep yir ba's on the slates, and yer gas on a peep These days wurnae rosy, and money wis tight the wages haul finished by Setterday night but still we came through it and weathered the ruts the reason is simple, our parents had guts. Just discovered your page I was born and brought up in Salisbury St the continuation of Warwick st or Nicholson St as it was renamed. Went to St. Johns infant school there then on to St Johns at Tradeston st then up to Holyrood. Remember when England & Scotland played at Hampden we would all stand in Pollokshaws rd and cheer the buses as they went by and the people threw out money to us. Do you remember hislops were you got a barra and people would do flittings in it. My uncle used to go round the streets and sell whelks, he came from Commercial Rd. I married a guy from Commercial Rd got a wee single end in Lawmoor st then my auntie took me to her factors and I got a room and kitchen at the top end of Moffat st near Barneys bar had cousins in Moffat st also my grannie, aunties and cousins came from there. They all went to St Lukes school. I worked in Twomax from 50's until I started having my family. Moved up to Castlemilk from Moffat st when the sooside was pulled! down. I remember going to the may procession my cousin was a page boy at one of them. Does anyone remember Charlies the cafe in Rutherglen rd used to sit there for hours with my pal who came from Errol st.

Do you (or might someone else you can think of) know of the Pope family who lived at 371 Caledonia Road? My mother, Janet Johnston Pope, was born (30th., September, 1916) and grew up there. She left in the late thirties or early forties when her moher died. I don't know whether her father, Murdoch McLeod Pope(a joiner journeyman)continued living there alone, or moved, or, perhaps, remarried. It is possible that he lived there from as early as before the first wold war through until the tenements were demolished, when, if he hadn't already gone, he would, presumably, have been rehoused. So, did you know anyone of that name living elsewhere? Any information, observations, ideas I could follow up, or, whatever, would be very gratefully received.

What I find very funny about being brought up in the gorbals is that when you meet fellow scotsmen, to put on a "hard image" they often tell you that they were from the Gorbals. But when you ask them what school they went to, or what street they came from, they often become muddled and then you realise its all a made up story to accentuate some sort of image they want to build up about themselves. It happened only a few weeks ago. A guy in a bar was boasting that he had been born and brought up in the Gorbals but when I "cross examined" him it turned out he was from Motherwell and had only passed through the old Gorbals on a bus!!! I suppose the legend of the Gorbals lives on but beware of Gorbals fakes...they're everywhere!!!

I remember living in Kidston St just of Crown St (don't know if that is the right spelling) it was a ground floor 1 bedroom tennement house and there was 11 of us 6 daughters & 3 son There was 4 in a bed and we had 2 double bed and I had to sleep in a single bed by myself because I used to wet the bed. My family was called Meikleham, I remember drunks sleeping up the close and I had to go to a outside toilet with newspaper as toilet roll on a string, it was freezing in winter, my mam and dad slept in the living room in a alcove with curtains, there was a settee and 2 chairs, a sink and a cooker and we used to get bathed in front of the fire in metal bath. I can remember mam and DAd wallpapering and having to clog all the holes us with newspaper we then moved to Castlemilk were we had a bathroom I lives at Ballintaye Rd and have been back to Glasgow last year to have a look at our old house in castlemilk. I am now looking for 2 friends I knocked about with in castlemilk Ca! rol Anderson & Laura McAlease.
