To Joe who wanted to know if there was anyone who remembered the BBB's picture house. Yes, I did, although I thought from memory it was in Adelphi St. I remember my mother didn't like us going there as she thought we came back with extra cargo so it was the Paragon in Cumberland Street we had to go to on a Saturday afternoon. The day we went to see 'The Song of Bernadette' I was turned away because I wasn't eight yet and that was the age for getting into see that particular movie. Don't know why. I grew up in Mathieson St, Moffat St where my granny lived in 410 and then round the corner in Rutherglen Road across from DIRTY MAGGIE's book store. Our close was between Cochrane the Grocers and Cockburn the chemist. Went to St. Francis School in 1941 the Oatlands School when my mother took us out of the Catholic School.

Recently I read an article about a plan to honour Private Jimmy Stokes a hero from the Gorbals who received the Victoria Cross during WW2. It mentioned that his son James Jr. had emigrated to Canada after the War. I worked with James Stokes in the 60's. He was a physiotherapist as I am, but never mentioned a distinguished father. I wonder if he was the son of Private Stokes. Could anyone help, especially the hero's sister Helena McClymont. Thanks

Fond memories of my early years living at 130 Abbotsford Place 1959 - 1971. Remember the Lynch family and Mrs Peat from the same close. I think at the bottom of the close there was a laundry and on the other side some kind of shop, but it later became someone's residence. The Fourways pub sat on the corner. Right across the road was Abbotsford school, played football got chased by the janny. Round the corner in Devon St was Leanords the newsagents, Keatons (deli?) and the homes of my friends Gerry Colqhoun, John Arniel and David Howie. Used to love playing 2 man hunt, hide n go seek, kick the can and numerous other games in the 'backs' along with climbing and dreepying over the dykes (I suppose they should be called walls now). Round the next corner in Eglinton St, there was Rinas greengrocers and a great shop (can't remember name) where we used to buy single fireworks and yes it was myself and friends who used to throw them up the closes...sorry! (If I found my kids doing that now...) Also living in Devon St were the O'Doherty family (relatives) and the Heaneys (more relatives) I would love to hear from anybody who remembers me and/or can fill in details.

Came across this site as I was passing time as my 'Gorbals born' husband has gone to Botswana this weekend. We were married in the Gorbals at Wynd United Free Church in Crown Street. I read with interest that many people are looking for old photo's of the Gorbals, may I suggest you try www.mitchelllibrary.org.uk and go to virtual Glasgow. I can assure you that you will have many hours of nostalgia as this site brought me to tears as not only did I see the "close" where my mom was born but also where I played as a child around my granny's close. Please check it out and let me know what your emotions were like.

Yes, I remember wee Murn and her shop in Sandyfauld St and also went to St. Francis School which had the big bell called Paddy in the side yard. Split my chin open in the school yard there when I was six. Have written three books, the first one features much of my life growing up in the Gorbals from 1936 - 1958. I recall dirty Maggie's bookstore in Rutherglen Rd facing where I lived, Greasy Peter's fish and chips (best in the Gorbals) and the Glen Fish and chips in Rutherglen Rd. Our neighbours in 380 Rutherglen Rd were the McCormack's, the Bonner's, the Creamer's, the Bell's. Are any of you out there? George Bell used to pipe in the new year with his pipes while standing on the landing above us. These people are all mentioned in my first book which is called "Whush...Up the Lum". Would love to hear from any of you.

Accidents. There are 2 accidents that stick in my memory and I wonder if anyone from the Gorbals can recall them. The first was the death of a young girl who was knocked down and killed by one of the RAF lorries based at Richmond Park. The accident happened on Rutherglen Rd at Snowden St where she lived and was due to be the May Queen that year, which I think was 1942. The other concerns a collision with a bus and another vehicle opposite the Ritz Picture house at the junction of Caledonia Rd and Rutherglen Rd and was in the winter of 41 or 42. Some of the casualties were taken into closes at Braehead St, awaiting the ambulances. As a youngster these memories have stuck with me and I wonder if they are correct.

Also, a good website is www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/history/scotlandonfilm/index.html. There you can look up old Glasgow theatre's and family living in days gone by.. It's quite amusing actually. I was born at 34 Sandiefield St in 1918, which makes me middleaged. Wee Murrin lived in the close and kept the shop next to St Francis school. The Paddens lived 2 stairs up middle door, the O'Haras and the Hislops 1 up old 'Candy' Hislop was a bookie, his son in law Johnny McGarry was the edge-up man in the close. My brothers and I were all called 'Raff' in these days. My mother died when she was only 33 and my granny took 5 of us to her house up the pawn close in Naburn St next to Kidston St, then we moved to Hospital St. I married Helen Keating who lived at 200 Waddell St, the post office close. Someone was asking about the Dunnions, I can remember them they were a big family, I used to see them walking up Sandyfauld St next to St Francis, Anna used to be friends with Cathy Reynolds. At school I was pals with Joseph Campbell whose older brother Jim was flyweight champion. I can also remember Daniel Cronin. Benny Lynch was coming to the fore then, and also Johnny McGrory and his brother Tim. I stayed at 161 Moffat St after marriage, the corner of Hayfield St. I used to go to Dirty Maggies for old Readers Digests, I can remember buying a fish supper in greasy Peters for twopence when we were in our teens. Does anyone remember Tommy Fitzpatrick and the Campbells from the 'Stickers' or wee Scragowich of the 'bee hive'?

Does anyone remember my family, Bradley's? We lived at 740 Rutherglen Road, across from Richmond Park around 1965? Moved away then came back to 39 Polmadie Road around 1972-3? I went to Bonaventure's primary school. I remember the 'gas scares' from the BOC plant, the Moll's Mire pub at the corner of Polmadie Road and Roseberry Street, the hurricane of 1969, the noise from Dixons Blazes at night, when David Cassidy played a gig at Shawfield and going to 'the shows' (Carnival) over on the Glasgow Green. Women with rollers in their hair, kept in place with a scarf and pushing their prams full of dirty washing to take to the steamie. Taking their rugs outside and beating the hell out of them with a stick. Hanging washing out to dry on a clothesline fixed up on the outside of the tenement window. Making big pots of stovies because it was cheap (and tasty). Whitening the edges of the doorsteps and stairs. When having a christening giving a biscuit with a coin inside to the first child you passed who was the same sex as the baby, for good luck. Nippy sweeties, dainties, crisps with little blue bags of salt, road tar going soft in the summer heat, bogeys made of old prams, going to watch weddings as a kid just so you could catch the pennies that were thrown. So many memories!

Hi, I'm looking for childhood friends of my mother, Mary Donnelly & her sister Catherine. Lived in Ballater Street in 1950's before moving to Castlemilk just before I was born (at Rottenrow! what a name eh!). Mary & Catherine attended St Lukes as did her mother, another Mary and sister Margaret, known as Matt and their younger sister Katherine who worked at Twomax's and lived in Lawmoor Street. Their family name was Black. My mother, Mary then went onto Holyrood and Catherine attended St Bonnie's. My mother's birthday is on 28th July and as a birthday present any news from her childhood would be a great present.

I was born in 1957 and brought up in Lawmoor Street with my gran and grandpa Willie and Peggy McCallum, who then moved to Queen Elizabeth square, and I moved with my parents to St Ninians Stirling. I still remember my pal Eddie Bagan who went to St Francis school, I went to Camden St. I also remember when Eddie and I were very young, his dad Franky Bagan and my Grandpa Wullie taking us to a junior cup final at Hampden and Eddie getting lost and the whole of Lawmoor St spending the night looking for him. Eddie's mum was called Gertrude Bagan, he had a sister called Elizabeth I think. I remember Jackie and Katie Purden from Queen Elizabeth square, and there was a crabbit auld bugger called Cutty who used to to be drunk all the time and would chase us into the cemetary. My dad came from Black St in Townhead, his name is Duncan Thomson. My mothers name is Mary Fraser McCallum and they still live in Stirling. My mums sister Isabel married John Stewart and moved to Castlemilk. My uncle John sadly passed away a few years ago. My 3 cousins Margaret, Janet and wee Isobel still live in Castlemilk. I remember wee Murrin's in Sandyfaulds Street, and I also remember Tommy Malarkeys roudn the corner in Mathieson Street. I am not sure if it was his sister who worked with him in Dirty Maggies in Rutherglen Rd. McLintocks Factory Sweetie Shop was where you could buy a penny bag of mis-shapes. A hard bag contained toffees, humbugs, etc and a soft bag had marshmallows, macaroons and fudge. I remember Greasy Peter's, the fish shop and his wife was called Pat. My uncle WULLIE (Birdie) DORAN drove a horse drawn milk float for Hamilton's Dairy across the road. He used to take us for a 'run' in it on a Sunday and we all loved it. McNeil Street was a great street most of the time. If you made too much soup, you used to take if down to somebody who wasn't working and get your pot back the next day. My father BILL McINCH had an allotment out at Braehead St and used to come down the street with armfuls of lettuce, tomatoes, beetroot, sybies and flowers. My sister Betty used to get sent round to all the old women on their own with littles bundles of veg and flowers. As Mary Robinson wroter in her email 15.04.03, her mum used to say "There was more good came out of the Gorbals than there ever was bad". How true! This site has brought back so many memories. I went to school - St Francis and St Bonaventure's with MARY FOSTER and MATILDA (Tilly) MULLEN. Mary married Jack Gordon and moved from Cramond St to East Kilbride. Tilly married Joe Simms and moved from Moffat St to Govanhill. I would love to hear from them.

I have discovered many of her relatives on the origins site and would dearly like to find some descendants that are alive today if possible. Thus if anyone knows anything of the following people and they could let me know I would be very grateful. John Lennox married Kate in 1922. Lizzie Crockert Lennox married George Bennie in 1925. Janet Rodden Lennox married Alexander MacKenzie in 1909. Annie Davidson Lennox married George Munn in 1908. Mary Lennox who married James Low in 1919. (James died in 1930 at 153 Gloucester St, Glasgow). My dad was brought up by George Morrison and Elizabeth (nee McLaughlan) Keir in the Gorbals until he joined the Royal Navy in 1950. My true Gorbals icons, Dan Cronnin the Gorbals gangster with a heart, he would come up the street if somebody's furniture was out in the street to be avicted and he would pay the debt and that was a man with a heart. Then there was Maw Devine, Martin Devine and Isa from the bookies. I would go in with a line for my father for four bob and Isa would give me two bob back for school. Maw Devine would have all the old neighbours in at night to watch TV. Sometimes I was included as my Granny Maw Pattison was one as was Calligan, Dalton and Russell. Old Tam Russell another great, Mick Kelly, Barnies Bar we used to take in the empties let the door swing then back out with the same old empties and back in with them again, you soon got the money for the Pictures as they used to say it has been the greatest education I could ever had to be a Gorbals Boy. This one is for Tommy Deehan who has such vivid memories of his days with the Rancel. I remember the team too... or more accurately, my mum washing the team strips in the sink at McNeil Street. You did well remembering Shug Wiseman and Tommy. He and my dad, Billums Taylor and my uncle - Davy McLean were great mates and ran the team together for a few years in the fifties. My dad claimed that they "sold" Pat Crerand for a set of strips and some corrugated iron... me thinks this may have been something of a tale but hey who knows. He had a similar story for Frank McLintock! Anyway, its nice to know that there are still some folks out there who remember the good ol' days and that they weren't all about razor weilding and money lending... as my mum never tired of saying, there was more good folks come out of the Gorbals than there ever was bad! My grandfather was born in Glasgow and his family ran a pub called Molloy's in the Gorbals for a number of years (my guess would be between WW1 and the end of WW2). I have occasionally heard the name of the pub in connection with Benny Lynch the boxer, and have spoken to one or two people who were in the pub itself many years ago. I was hoping to find a photo of the bar (through a photo archive service) that I might be able to buy. Or any other info that might be of interest. I have checked the virtual mitchell website, so far with no luck! Any info that you (or your parents/grandparents) might have would be great. Such as, do you know which street the pub was on? If you think you can point me in the right direction, I'd be very grateful, thanks Sean.

My daughter researched this website and I'm overjoyed to read all the nostalgic reminises of Glasgow and my old stamping ground. No more Barmans left now just a heap of old grave stones. We lived in the 1st floor tenement at 664 Eglinton Toll. I attended Cuthbertson St and Queens Park schools. I was born 1937 and (Freda my sister) 1933. Is Netta (Devon St) still in Glasgow? Penny Bernstein (Thistle St circa 1940's), a great pal still in America? Mrs Browns Bakery shop off Gorbals St, corner Rutherglen Rd, run by Issac sold superb cakes, my sister married him. We also bought Baigell's from Fogell's - great stuff! Does anyone remember the Sunday night dances at the Jewish Institute on South Portland St? (Strutting and eyeing up the talent) Plaza Ballroom just off the Toll - Victoria Rd. Who can remember? Tuesday nights birrowing around the fountain like Fred Astaire/Ginger Rodgers. What a brilliant site! Born at 305 Caledonia Rd then moved to 273 Florence St in 1943, maiden name McDonald, 3 sisters - Jean, Mamie and Margaret who was May Queen in 1948. Remembered lots of things I had forgotten... the weighing machine, the sausage dyke, the briquette man. As soon as I read about the wee brush factory at Mathieson Street... I could smell it! The Deep Sea... do you remember the wee man who wrapped the fish suppers asking... vinegar on them? He said it to everybody and by the time my sister and I got served, we were laughing so much we could hardly ask for our fish suppers. The wehaveit dairy... th sign said... we have it, if we don't have it, we'll get it, if we can't get it, you've had it! And does anyone remember Sylvan soap that floated in the water? There's a brilliant book full of pictures on the Gorbals - The Gorbals, an illustrated History by Eric Eunson www.stenlake.co.uk. To Helen Wemyss, Australia... I have photos of the Basil Spence flats being demolished, from the first charge going off, to the heap of rubble and dust at the end. If you email your full address, I'd be happy to send you copies. In answer to Aileen Stewart's enquiry about Hayfield school. The school was demolished in 1984, but I could supply Aileen with what I think is the only photo of Hayfield. Just let me know, and I will gladly post it. B.K.

Dear friends. As you may be aware the Gorbals Hertiage Environment Trust has been set up and the first unique and historically important project is to restore and reuse the cemetery gatehouse as a social history/genealogy resource. I would be more than grateful to those of you who would consider helping by providing a letter of support (to strengthen Lottery Grant application). Contact... A couple of months ago, I put in a request for the where abouts of Joe McLean. A good friend of mine who used to frequent the Clelland Bar in Hospital Street. I left for New Zealand in 1967. I have heard that Joe went to America, I have some lovely photographs taken in the Clelland Bar. I would really like someone to put me in touch with Joe if possible. He had a party in his house if I can remember right, it was in Peebles St off Bedford Street, Gorbals. When I put the message in before someone sent a photograph of the Clelland Bar to me, my computer broke down and I couldn't reply. If that person could contact me again I would be obliged. Moira

I have been on Gorbals live for a number of months, and I keep hearing your mention the picture halls in the Gorbals. I suppose I am the only one who remembers 'The Wellington Palace' in Commercial Road otherwise known as the Bee's. I skelped my backside from there all the way to Crown St thinking I was Hoppalong Cassidy. Maybe I am a lot older than the people writing in, I go back to the jeely jaur on a Saturday with big Mr Murray watching you never skipped in. This man must have been 7 feet tall. A Gorbals boy thrue and thrue!

My Grandparents Robt (Robinson) Moore & Agnes Fraser were married at 284 South York St (now Moffat St) in 1879. Agnes was born in Glasgow Robt in Edinburgh. Agnes's father was James Fraser, his occupation was Primary Mill Engine Keeper and I think he may have worked in Dixon Blazes or similar. Any information or assistance would be appreciated. I left Glasgow in the early sixties, joining the army and moving away returning occasionally for family occasions, such as births, marriages and sadly deaths. I would dearly like to hear from anyone who remembers me from those days for good or bad! To see how the individuals who cascaded out of Glasgow in that time have made their way in the world. Looking forward to hearing from you!

To Colin McFarlane in Wales. I well remember the Gorbals baths. In about '48 I won my elementary swimming certificate which at the time was a free pass to the Glasgow baths of your choice. I chose the Gorbals since I lived on Rutherglen Rd and used to go there often twice a day. I well remember those changing cubicles round the pool, and the tubs we sat at splashing water on ourselves.

Anyone with any info, my mum would be really impressed! She was born in 1935 in Oatlands as Helen (Ellen) Boyd. She had two sisters, May, Peggy and a brother Robert. She recalls the Gorbals with great affection but 'defected' to Paisley in 1963 when she married my dad. Its their 40th anniversary this year. Memories of that time would be wonderful. Please email me if any of those names are familiar!

I am the last surviving Fogell of Fogell's Bakery. I don't know Katherine Hirst and am curious as to who her grandparents were. My paternal grandparents were Philip and Etta Fogell. My father had moved to London from Giffnock to follow a career in music so when my grandfather died, my aunt (Alaine Fogell) ran the shop with Etta until it closed for the Gorbals redevelopment: they couldn't face the relocation and my grandmother was becoming less able to cope. Philip's brother Connie was a delivery driver for a while until he and his family emigrated to South Africa: they are now in Perth Australia. Alaine's daughter Phyla is married and still living in Glasgow. Alaine passed away a couple of years ago.

Re: Fogells the Bakery
I am the Granddaughter of the late Phillip and Etta Fogell. My late mother was Alaine Fogell, as I am aware she did the "books" for the business. I think there is/was a brother of Philip Connie? My grandparents also had a son Martin who has 2 children - Glynn in S/A and Janice in Kent. Anne their mother also lives near Janice. Who are you related to? Please email.

I lived at 174 Florence Street, next door to the Hutchie Grammar. I went to Camden St School, but left there when I was 10 years old (1964). I can recall the tin sheds where you went for a shower, auld scobie the heedie (hauns looked like shovels when he shook my hand to say goodbye when I was leaving that great school) cos we were flitting to Castlemilk, but I have fond memories of the Gorbals though! Climbing the dykes, crawling along the sausage, the wee auld guy who sold the whelks and mussels from his barra. The (weehaveit) dairy as well and Duffy's Dairy. They also had a fruit shop at the old ruggy rd end of Florence St. Anybody remember the man who sold the brickets as well as his horse drawn cart? Also McKenzie's coal going all round the Gorbals selling his coal. I remember the price pretty clearly - 8/11 a bag of nuts, aye nuts not the wans you eat (he he he).

My dad had a Dairy in Sandyfaulds Street called Nisbet's Dairy which disappeared in the sixties. I played outside the shop when I was young. If anyone has a photograph of the shop or street, I would be interested. I was in training as a district nurse during 1955 and delivered a few babies in the Gorbals, wonderful people many a family lived in a single room and they were little palaces. I have fond memories of the people there.
